Veterinary Science Rare Books

Overview

The library has a number of old, fragile, valuable, and/or unique veterinary science items that have either been donated to us, or have come to us from the Veterinary Science Department's collection, looked after for the last 30 years or so by Dr Maurice Rewi Alley. Some of the major contributors to the collection are Dr. D. Martinovvich, Dr. A.D.M.G. Laing, and Professor W. Manktelow. Given the provenance of the collection, the importance of veterinary science to Massey University, and the value of the collection, particularly from a historical research perspective, a Veterinary Science Rare Books collections has been established within the Special Collections portfolio. Items from this collection will be digitised as resources allow.

Dr Alley joined Massey University as a Lecturer in Veterinary Pathology in 1968 and has worked with some of New Zealand's most iconic and vulnerable birds. He was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2016 in recognition for his services to conservation and education. Dr Alley and his wife established the Julie Alley Bursary awarded annually for post-graduate resarch in New Zealand conservation.

Items already held by the library that fit the criteria and scope of this collection (subject matter, along with their rarity and/or fragility) will be transferred to the collection.
